How it works

How ebook publishing works

If you already have a digital version of your book (usually in PDF, Word or InDesign format), then the process to start selling your book as an eBook consists of two stages:

  • eBook conversion and formatting  - turning your book into eBook files, and
  • eBook distribution – listing your eBook on the major eBook retailer websites
If you only have a printed version of your book, and do not have access to a digital copy, there is a preliminary step which involves digitizing your book. We scan each individual page, extract the content from the scans and then create a Word doc from the extracted text. For more details see our Printed and Out of Print Books page.

eBook Conversion and Formatting

In addition to the physical conversion of your title into eBook files, we can make adjustments to the layout and formatting so that your eBook looks fantastic when viewed on all eReaders and eBook software/ The two most popular formats are:

  • Kindle – we produce PRC/Mobi files which can be uploaded to Amazon’s Kindle Store or sold via your own website for direct uploading onto a Kindle or Kindle App.
  • Standard ePUB – this is the file format that virtually all eBook retailers, apart from Amazon, sell. B&N, Apple, Waterstone’s and Kobo all sell standard ePUB files.
There are two other formats which we are finding to be more and more popular. Both these formats only work on Apple devices such as iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch:
  • Fixed-layout ePUB – introduced by Apple to specifically cater for titles with a complex layout and picture books, this format can be used to create fantastic looking eBooks.
  • ‘Read Aloud’ ePUB – a very recent addition from Apple, ‘Read Aloud’ EPUB books take Fixed-layout a step further by catering for the introduction of audio narration, synchronized word-by-word highlighting and soundtracks. Perfect for children’s picture books, ‘Read Aloud’ are set to be a huge hit with younger iPad users.

eBook Distribution

Once you have your book converted into eBook format, you can distribute them through online retailers such as Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble.

We offer an eBook distribution service whereby we will submit your eBook to all the major online retailers including Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Waterstones. With our distribution service you will receive 100% of your royalties for each eBook you sell.
